A Season of Contemporary Japanese Films is one of Japan Desk Scotland’s past activities. It was held from 2000 till 2013 at Andrew Stewart Cinema, the home of Film Studies, University of Glasgow. The ideas behind the Film Season were reported in some detail by Gillian Provan for Scottish Television’s Going-Out section on 31 January 2013.
In 2012, the audience at the the 13th Film Season kindly donated £109.26 towards those affected by the East Japan Earthquake of 11 March 2011. JDS donated it to Japanese Matsuri for Glasgow, a recognised Scottish charity. JMG donated £943.53, including the donation from the Film Season, to Kunohe Village Office, Iwate Prefecture, which, in turn, donated it to nearby Noda and Fudai Village Offices, both of which were affected by the tsunami.
In 2013, the audience at the 14th Film Season kindly donated £52.11 towards those affected by the East Japan Earthquake. JDS donated it to Japanese Matsuri for Glasgow, which then donated it to Noda and Fudai Village Offices, via Kunohe Village Office.
As a by-product of the successful organisation of the Japanese Films Season for more than a decade, JDS developed a good relationship with Film Studies, University of Glasgow, and in 2012 helped their organisation of the post-war Japanese films festival.
